    Estimate

STEINBECK, John (1902-1968). The Pastures of Heaven. New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932.

8o. Original green cloth, gilt-lettered on front cover and spine; silver dust jacket printed in blue with gold stars (a few minor nicks along extremities, small hole in back panel).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of Steinbeck's rare second book, with the Bewer, Warren, Putnam imprint on spine. Although more favorably reviewed than Cup of Gold, Pastures of Heaven was also a commercial failure. Of the 2500 copies printed, 1650 were bound, but only 650 copies were sold. The remainder were sold by Brewer, Warren & Putnam to Robert O. Ballou for re-issue. Although not a success for Steinbeck, the novel does reveal his narrative abilities and emotive talents that would come to fruition later in the decade in his more well-known works Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. Goldstone & Payne A2a.
