    STEPHENSON, John and George BURN. The Channel Pilot, comprehending the harbours, bays and roads in the British Channel: with the English and French coasts, from the Thames mouth to the Bay of Biscay; including the North Sea. London: Robert Laurie and James Whittle: 1795. 2° (536 x 382mm). 24 engraved charts, of which 18 double-page, 3 folding and 3 full-page (of 26, lacking nos. 2, Mouth of the Thames, and 16, Plymouth Sound), and tide-table complete with volvelle (detached), folding at fore-edge. (Light soiling, browning, spotting, offsetting and creasing thoughout, charts 1 and 10 trimmed close at bottom edge, chart 1 with some creasing and short tears without losss, chart 10 with left-hand margin chipped and frayed just into plate image, the large folding chart of the North Sea printed on 2 sheets with a short tear but without loss.) Contemporary half calf (very worn, lacking spine, the gatherings retaining their original stitching, but with title and a few charts loose).

    RARE. Robert Laurie & James Whittle took over the leading map-publishing house of Robert Sayer and John Bennett in 1794. The present work is an updated and enlarged edition of Sayer & Bennett's A Complete Channel Pilot [1779-1781] (20 charts and tide-table; NMM 416). According to ABPC, only one copy has sold at auction since 1975, Sotheby's, 26 June 1997, lot 127, fetching £3,400 hammer. Copac and Worldcat report Cambridge and National Library of Scotland only. Not in NMM.
