    2 volumes, 8o (195 x 132 mm). 8 tinted lithographic plates by Sarony and Major after Taylor's drawings. (Some occasional light browning.) Original blind stamped rust-brown cloth (some light darkening and staining, light wear to spine ends). Provenance: Edward Rose (owner's name dated 1860 on endpaper); The Rt. Hon. Viscount Eccles (his sale, Christie's New York, 18 November 1983, lot 264).

    FIRST LONDON EDITION, issued simultaneously with the American edition, from the same sheets. "Unexcelled description of California's gold-rush days by a professional traveller and trained observer" (Howes).
