TESTOLINI, Gaetano. Rudiments of Drawing, Shadowing, and Colouring Flowers in Water Colours; Contained in Thirty-Six Instructive Lessons. London: H.K. Causton for G. Testolini, 1818.

Oblong 2o (252 x 395 mm). Aquatint frontispiece and 29 plates, 14 of which are hand colored, and hand colored table of colors used in the painting of flowers on p.5. (Some pale dampstaining to a few plates.) Contemporary red half morocco, marbled boards, morocco lettering piece on front cover (spine, corners and endpapers renewed). Provenance: Arpad Plesch (bookplate, his sale part III, Sotheby's London, 15 March 1976, lot 738).

FIRST EDITION of this fine drawing manual. The first plate in each series of pairs shows details, uncolored, and the second shows the same figure colored. The engraved frontispiece states that G. Testolini is an engraver, printseller & frame maker and follows with a list of his 'superfine' material offered for sale. VERY RARE: this is the only copy sold at auction in at least 35 years, according to American Book Prices Current, when it was last sold in the Plesch sale in 1976. Dunthorne 300 ("perhaps the finest of all drawing books of the period"); Nissen 1946; Prideax, Aquatint Engraving, 213.
