    16o (139 x 118 mm). One leaf of advertisements at end. 4 engraved plates. Original gray pictorial printed wrappers (front hinge cracked, some minor soiling); red morocco folding case. Provenance: Cortlandt Bishop (bookplate; his sale, Anderson Galleries New York, 15 November 1938, lot 2228).

    FIRST EDITION of Thackeray's account of the circumstances surrounding Napoleon's Parisian funeral. Although the work seemed to have been well-received by the press, it was not a popular success. Van Duzer 193.

EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with numerous portraits and scenes (some inlaid to size). Cosway-style binding of full blue morocco gilt, spines in six compartments, gilt-lettered in two, others gilt-decorated, gilt edges, front morocco doublure in volume one with inset oval portrait miniature of Thackeray, other doublures of brown morocco, silk endpapers by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (very light wear at spine ends); cloth slipcase.
