THAILAND. Somdelat Phra-Paramendr Maha Mongkut, KING OF SIAM (d.1868). Autograph letter signed ('S P P M Mongkut RS on 4140th day of reign) to [William] Adamson, 'the manager of the Branch of Borneo Company limited at Singapore', Royal residence, Grand Palace Bangkok, 13 September 1862, in English, 3½ pages, 4to, with stamp on opening page, royal chop at end and green margins (opening page with hole cut at top, presumably monogram excised, affecting text on verso, upper corner dampstained, some wear at folds).

The King thanks Adamson for his order of 2000 cartridges of a Needham's patent fowling piece; he understands that an 'Armstrong gun' cannot be purchased, speculating that perhaps this is due to the British Government's fears that powerful European nations may 'follow the way of Siamese ruler'. The King puts in a request for Needham's to make him a similar gun to his own specifications, for ease of use against enemies along the river; he also places an order for a sewing machine and a quantity of pills, and pursues the possibility of selling Siamese tobacco in London and Manila.
