    3 volumes in one, 2o (301 x 217 mm). Engraved vignette title-page, numerous diagrams in the text (some full-page), head- and tail-pieces, 8-line initials. Near contemporary half calf, speckled paper boards. Provenance: Contemporary annotations on the recto of the first blank; Bibliotheca Böttigeri (early library stamp).

    FIRST EDITION. Poleni's preparatory work for his unfinished edition of Vitruvius is nonetheless "the first scientific study of an architectural text published after the great 'renaissance season'...an examination of the publishing history of Vitruvius, starting with the editio princes by Giovanni Sulpizio in 1486" (Millard). Containing Poleni's correspondence with Giovanni Batista Morgagni (1682-1771), and reprinting Bernadino Baldi's (1553-1617) life of Vitruvius, first published in 1612.
