FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, IN ORIGINAL CLOTH, following the German edition of 1848. A German traveller and adventurer, born in Recklinghausen, Werne gave up his position as Prussian vice-consul in Alexandria to participate in the campaigns of Mohammed Ali in the Sudan. In 1841, after recovering from a period of illness, he accompanied the expedition under the leadership of the Turksh officer, Selim Qabudan (Selim Bimbashi), which went upriver in sailing boats seeking the source of the Nile. The expedition was halted by impassable rapids when it reached the latitude of Gondokoro, near modern Juba. 'En route, Werne kept a diary of valuable scientific observations and produced the first European map of the river between Khartoum and Gondokoro'. Howgego Encyclopedia of Exploration 1800 to 1850, p. 636.
