    4o (272 x 210 mm). Errata leaf at end. Two engraved titles and seven engraved plates (2 folding). (Some spotting, some offsetting to text from plates.) Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, uncut (front cover detached, rear joint cracked, worn); chemise and quarter calf slipcase. Provenance: James Stoughton (signature on front pastedown, ink annotations in index; gifted to); Diana Stoughton (signature on front free endpaper).

    FIRST EDITION, with page 292 misnumbered 262 and pages 441-442 omitted from the pagination. White is arguably the founder of popular natural history and is admired by modern ornithologists as one of the first observers to record detailed notes of birds and their habitats.
