WHITTAKER, John (publisher) -- Magna Carta Regis Johannis XV. Die Junii anno regni XVII. A.D. MCCXV. London: John Whittaker, 1816.
Broadsheet 2° (449 x 334mm). PRINTED IN GOLD on card, title and 11 leaves, title decorated by hand in watercolour and bodycolour with the royal regalia, opening initial illuminated with floral border. (Occasional faint spotting.) Contemporary green morocco elaborately tooled in gilt, lilac endpapers, tissue guards, gilt edges, by Ph. Selenka, with his ticket (minor rubbing).
Whittaker published 'the most magnificent of all editions of the Magna Carta' (Lowndes) in several issues, all printed in gold to show off this technical achievement. Some copies were printed on coloured vellum and even jewelled, and rarely are two copies alike. The present copy contains the text of Magna Carta only, printed on glazed card, and is richly bound by Selenka. Cf. R. Thomson, Historical Essay [on] Magna Carta 1829, pp.458-60, calling for a list of Barons in this issue, not present here. Lowndes II, 1450.
