    The case of typical form, the arched hood centred by a foliate clasp, pierced sound frets to front and sides and surmounted by giltwood figural finials, the sliding front panel with cast brass lenticle depicting the Rape of Europa, the brass dial with polychrome painted flowers to the arch above an engraved and painted moonphase, cast brass C-scroll spandrels to the silvered arcaded chapter ring signed A VAN OOSTROM/AMSTELDAM, matted centre with silvered alarm disc, blued steel hands (later), date aperture above VI, the thirty-hour four pillar movement with anchor escapement, the alarm mounted on the right side of the movement, outside countwheel with Dutch strike on two bells above; pendulum

    COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
    H.M. Vehmeyer, Clocks, Their origin and development, 1320-1880, Gent, 2004, pp. 420-421
    Vehmeyer shows a thirty-hour long case clock by Anthonie van Oostrom with an apparently identical chapter ring, spandrels, decorated arch and gilt brass Europa ornament. He describes him as a 'fine maker' (p.1000), active in the period 1740-1768. He had his workshop in Grote Kattenburgerstraat.
