This monument was Montferrand's last work, commissioned by Alexander II in May 1856 as a memorial to his predecessor, Nicholas I. Montferrand used similar materials to his previous project, the construction of the neighbouring St Isaac's Cathedral, for the foundations and the base.
The bronze statue was extremely technically sophisticated for its time and was the first equestrian statue in the world to be supported by just two points (the rear hoofs of the horse). It remains to this day a striking evocation of military prowess and political power.
