The Impeyan Pheasant is a resident of the eastern Himalayas in southern Asia. In the winter the pheasant is found mainly in forested areas and in summer on more open slopes of grass and rocks.

The Himalayan Monal secures a distinct position among pheasants due to its prominent build, brilliant plumage and strong association with local folklore. The scientific name commemorates Lady Mary Impey, for a note on whom see lot 7.
