    inscribed 'H.M. Ship Revenge in the. Action off Cape Trafalgar. She had 29. men killed & 53 wounded.' (lower centre) and inscribed 'Admiral Louis [sic] Hole/was 1st Lieutenant of the "Revenge" at/the Battle of Trafalgar/Octr, 21st 1805' (on a label attached to the reverse)

    Admiral Lewis Hole (1779-1870) entered the Navy in 1793 and was made Midshipman in 1794. He served in H.M.S. Polyphemus at the battle of Copenhagen in 1801 and was First Lieutenant of the Revenge at Trafalgar, being subsequently promoted Commander for his conduct. Made Captain in 1813, after an active and successful career, he received his final promotion to Admiral in 1861.
