"The Black Town (so called from being principally the residence of the native merchants) is distant rather less than half a mile from Fort St.George". Indian bazaars were frequently located outside the British settlements in the interests of health to protect the Europeans from the "unhealthy miasmas" which were believed to be the causes of diseases such of cholera and typhoid.
