The design of this ormolu-enriched centre-table is derived from the celebrated marquetry table des Muses, supplied in 1771 for Louis XVI's Garde-Meuble by Jean-Henri Riesener (mâitre 1768) and now on display at the Petit Trianon, Versailles. The original model was copied, or as here adapted, by many of the top late 19th century Parisian ébénistes, among them Beurdeley and Linke. A related bureau plat by the firm of Durand featuring similar ormolu bas-reliefs is illustrated in C. Payne, 19th Century European Furniture, Woodbridge, 1981, p. 127, no. 297.
