    The lid inlaid with a plane and flowering plants with a concealed compartment enclosing the lock and key, the panelled sides inlaid with intricate geometric patterns and the underside of the lid depicting a cabinet maker and apprentice at a saw bench with an array of cabinet maker's tools and a plaque inscribed 'F.M. BALLACH/L.4 L.JANNUAR.1845', with a cup and cover to one side supporting a man with a pennant inscribed Mewe, on an associated mahogany stand
    The box 14½ in. (36 cm.) high; 21½ in. (55 cm.) wide; 14½ in. (37 cm.) deep

    The inscription on the pennant is slightly unclear but probably Mewe, a town, now renamed Gniew, formerly in West Prussia.
