The Academy Cinema, located at 165 Oxford Street, London, specialised in screening avande-garde continental films. The building was damaged during a bombing raid in 1940, and 1954 the cinema's director, George Hoellering, commissioned Angus McBean to redecorate the interiors. In addition to designing the Pavilion Restaurant which was attached to the cinema, McBean also designed the basement ballroom, which served as the location of the first show by The Rolling Stones in 1962. The cinema and surrounding interiors were famously designed in a playful Empire-revival style, with mahogany and wrought-iron Empire-style furniture mixed with green-and-blue painted concrete pillars surmounted with Ionic capitals, brass chandeliers, arrow and lion-masked wall lights, blue-and-green striped velvet curtains and striped yellow silk wallpaper to match.
