THE FRENCH-FASHIONED TEA-TABLE, DERIVED FROM POMPEIAN-PILLARED ALTAR-TRIPODS FIRST INTRODUCED BY LOUIS SEIZE MARCHANDS MERCIERS, IS AN EXAMPLE OF ARTISTIC FURNITURE DESIGNED BY WILLIAM CHRISTIAN CODMAN (D.1921) FOR EXECUTION BY THE NEW BOND STREET FIRM OF MESSRS JOHNSTONE, NORMAN & CO., CABINET-MAKERS AND UPHOLSTERERS TO QUEEN VICTORIA. RELATED FURNITURE, DESIGNED BY CODMAN AROUND 1880 FOR A LONDON MANSION, ACCOMPANIED CONTEMPORARY AUBUSSON TAPESTRIES WOVEN WITH 18TH CENTURY SUBJECTS (SEE ANON, MODERN ARTISTIC FURNITURE, DECORATION , JULY 1884). FROM 1891 CODMAN WAS EMPLOYED AS A SILVER DESIGNER BY THE CELEBRATED NEW YORK GORHAM MANUFACTORY.
