    En suite with the preceding lot, each with white floral-embroidered back, arms and seat, sphinx-carved arm supports and some later ebonised decoration and some traces of metal inlay, one bearing a paper label inscribed 'No. I' and both with various inscribed numbers (2)

    Jacob Frères, Rue Meslée, was the stamp used by Georges II Jacob and François-Honoré-Georges Jacob during their collaboration from 1797-1803.

    An identical pair of fauteuils -- and certainly from the same set as the present pair -- was sold Sotheby's, New York, 28 March, 1992, lot 330.

    Two very similar fauteuils, also by Jacob Frères, are illustrated in J. Nicolay, L'art et la manière des maîtres ébénistes français au XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 1976, vol. I, p. 243, fig. F and p. 244, fig. E.
