    A PAIR OF GEORGE III POLYCHROME-DECORATED AND CANED ARMCHAIRS
    LATE 18TH CENTURY
    Decorated with flowers and foliate swags, with a tablet-centred top rail and pierced tapering splats, with downcurved arms and a buttoned cushion, the bowed front rail centred by crossed torchere and quiver, on square tapering legs, the decoration refreshed.

    These chairs relate to designs by Thomas Sheraton for 'Drawing Room Chair and Parlour Chair', and reproduced in Sheraton Furniture Designs from the Cabinet-Maker's and Upholsterer's Drawing-book 1791-94, with a preface by Ralph Edwards, London, 1949, pl. 40-43. Similar painted or 'japanned' chairs with caned seats were also being produced at the same time by Gillows of Lancaster (See Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730 - 1840, Woodbridge, 2008, pp. 191-193).
