    EARLY 19TH CENTURY
    Each with solid rectangular panelled back centred by a circle with a parcel-gilt and polychrome-painted heraldic achievement 'DEO NON FORTUNA', the solid seat on roundel-headed reeded x-frame supports joined by a baluster stretcher, on spade feet
    The arms are those of Gardiner with Boddam. (2)

    The arms decorating this pair of chairs commemorate the marriage of the Gardiner and Boddam families in 1782, through Samuel Gardiner of Combe Lodge, Whitechurch, Oxfordshire, to Mary Boddam, heiress and niece of Rawson Boddam, Governor of Bombay 1785-88.
