These pedestals relate to a design by Charles Percier (1764-1838) for a guéridon which was commissioned from Jacob-Desmalter in 1809 for the bed-chamber of Empress Josephine at Fontainebleau (Musée National du Château de Fontainebleau, Meubles entrés sous le Premier Empire, J-P. Samoyault ed., Paris, 2004, no. 180, pp. 253-4; the design sold Drouot Richelieu, Paris, 15 July 2001, lot 11). The design (illustrated) displays the same tripod base with cross-stretchers although the Fontainebleau guéridon's were executed in ormolu, rather than giltwood and mahogany.
