Portugual's colonial empire provided an almost inexhaustible supply of exotic hardwoods which they frequently used in solid form instead of relying upon the more cost effective veneers. Two related settees are illustrated in F.Castro Freire, Mobilario Museu-Escola de Artes Decorativas Portuguesas, vol 1, Lisbon, 2001, inv. 24 and 660.

    Provenance

Bought from Bernheimer, Munich, in 1964.
