Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl. 48, no. 3 notes that the pattern of this vase was 'copied from antiques in the Albani and Barberini collections'. Hope had this pattern copied and a pair was made and placed at one end of his sculpture gallery at Duchess Street, as guardians to the entrance to the other rooms of his mansion museum. The latter pair [The Hope 'Vasi-Cippi'] was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 16 November 1989, lot 14.
