She grew up in Paris and New York and was educated in the French school system. In 2002, the French government bestowed her with the honor of "Officier" of the Order of Arts and Letters for her lifetime contribution to world culture.
She is recognized for her philanthropic endeavors, managing two non-profit foundations dedicated to mental illness, homelessness, suicide prevention and child abuse. Ms. Steel has won numerous awards for her work with mentally ill adolescents and children. She is also the mother of nine children.
In addition to her more serious pursuits, she has had a lifelong interest in fashion. She attended New York University and Parsons School of Design, and is a devotee of haute couture.
