This superbly-carved pendant features a mythical beast which embodies strength, which was skillfully adapted to the stone. Compare the similar pendant from the Sonnenschein Collection illustrated by A. Salmony in Archaic Chinese Jades, The Art Institute of Chicago, 1952, pl. XXXIV (7), where it is dated late Eastern Zhou.
