FORMERLY THE PROPERTY OF THE WIFE OF GENERAL NGUYEN VAN THIEU, PRESIDENT OF THE FORMER REPUBLIC OF SOUTH VIETNAM (1967-1975)
Madame Nguyen Van Thieu was the last serving First Lady of the former Republic of South Vietnam. Growing up as the son of a small landowner, her husband - General Nguyen Van Thieu quickly aspired to politics during his youth and sought high positions in Vietnamese government. His ambition and skillful military career led to his appointment as President in 1967, where he remained until 1975. Madame Van Thieu was known to have always worn jadeite jewellery at many of the state functions she attended with her husband. Offered as Lot 2315, this Burmese jadeite bangle was considered one of her prized possessions. This fine jewel displays a rich emerald green and a high degree of translucency, features so typical of the old mine material coveted by top jadeite collectors. The piece is uniquely fashioned into a lotus root design. This type of jadeite bangle carving is rare as it would entail a great wastage of material, rendering the piece an important find in the market today.
