The Gemological Institute of America distinguishes diamonds with the palest of blue tints from colourless diamonds, and classifies these rare stones formerly graded 'D' as Type II b. These Type II b diamonds are semi-conductors of electricity due to minute quantities of boron in the crystal lattice. They are extremely rare and it is reported that less than one in 1000 fine quality diamonds can be classified as Type II b. All naturally occuring blue diamonds, ranging from palest to deepest blue, fall into this category.
