A CARVED OVAL AGATE CAMEO REPRESENTING THE TRIUMPH OF BACCHUS
LATE 16TH OR 17TH CENTURY
Bacchus holding a thyrsus, riding in a garlanded chariot drawn by two leopards, escorted by a faun joyously blowing his horn, groundline, enclosed in a laurel crown; in an oval gold mount applied to a square lapis lazuli ground, within a composite gilt-bronze frame cast with satyr's masks, birds, flowers and leaves, the corners marked by pear-shaped lapis lazuli appliques
Triumphs were a favourite theme of renaissance gem engraving. For further examples see I. Weber, Kostbare Steine Die Gemmensammlung Kurfürsten Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz (Munich, 1992), nos. 81-85.
