17TH OR 18TH CENTURY
Her hair tied in a knot above the brow, with long curls falling down below her shoulders, draped neckline, facing front, head turned slightly to the right; in an oval gold mount embellished with rubies and emeralds, secured by claws to an oval ebony ground, within an associated octagonal ormolu-mounted ebony frame
For a similar but later bust identified as Thalia, the muse of Comedy, from the head of the antique marble statue in the Sala delle Muse in the Vatican, see J. Draper, 'Cameo Appearances' in The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, New York, 2008, p. 42, no. 92).
