A CARVED OVAL SARDONYX CAMEO BUST OF FLORA
FIRST HALF 19TH CENTURY
Seen from behind, drapery over her shoulder, roses in her hair which is drawn up into a knot at the back with curls falling onto her neck, facing in profile to the right; in an oval gold mount applied to an oval red jasper ground within an associated pierced gilt-bronze frame surrounded by scrolls, leaves and grottesche, initials 'BRX' behind
The present head is inspired by the sculpture of Antonio Canova (1757-1822), particularly his Dancers, a bust version of which is at Apsley House in the collection of the Duke of Wellington. For similar cameo heads see L. P. B. Stefanelli, Bolletino di Numismatica: I Modelli di Cera di Benedetto Pistrucci (Rome, 1989) nos. 328, 329, 330.
