A CARVED OVAL SARDONYX CAMEO REPRESENTING ATHENA AND HADES
18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY
Athena helmeted, wearing aegis with Medusa mask over drapery, holding a spear and seated on a rock offering a libation on a garlanded flaming altar; she faces Hades, bearded, wearing a diadem and holding a mace, seated on a rock and with Cerberus at his feet, groundline, framed within a laurel crown, reserved from upper layer of the stone; secured by claws in an oval gold mount within a later octagonal ebony frame, the outer border inlaid with hardstone panels
The composition compares with a red jasper gem illustrated in S. Reinach, Pierres Gravées (Paris, 1895), pl. 65, II, no. 72/1, 'Peut être d'après le groupe d'Hadès et Athéna par Agoracrite dans le temple d'Athéna Itonia prés de Coronée'.
