Gastone Novelli was born in Vienna and started to paint and produce graphic works influenced by Max Bill after World War II. In the late 1950s he traveled to Paris and met the Surrealists Tristan Tzara, André Masson, Man Ray and Hans Arp and eventually started the magazine L'esperienza moderna and collaborated with poets and writers. His works were exhibited in solo exhibitions in New York, Germany and Italy, and he was invited to participate at the 1968 Venice Biennale.
