Jack Sparrow's compass, bartered from the voodoo mystic Tia Dalma, does not point north like a normal compass, but points to the thing you want most in this world. In Curse Of The Black Pearl, the compass leads Jack to the Isla de Muerta to find the Treasure of Cortés. A key prop, Jack Sparrow's compass continues to feature heavily in the next three films Dead Man's Chest, At World's End and On Stranger Tides.
The compass dial was made to spin on screen by holding a magnet underneath. Four opening and two closed compasses were made for the film. This compass was returned from the set to England to be re-made, as the Caribbean climate led to a slight bowing of the lid.
The medallions are identical to the one worn around the neck of Elizabeth Swann [Keira Knightley], years after she had taken it from the neck of Will Turner [Orlando Bloom]. A central prop of the film, the medallion is part of the 882 identical pieces of cursed Aztec gold forming the scattered 'Treasure of Cortés', which the crew of the Black Pearl must gather and return to the chest to lift the curse. Six large and 850 smaller medallions were made for the film. The large medallions were used for detailed close-ups and special effects.
