Lot Notes The Joan Miró, Composition à la lune bleu (a descriptive title only, since the artist referred to this series by their date of execution) is from a special group completed just after the artist's triumphal return to Paris in 1948. Known as the "slow" paintings, they were in fact created quite rapidly. The Doll Miró is typical of a number that the noted critic Jacques Dupin selected for particular comment:

The elaborate paintings are medium-sized and noteworthy for the
diversity and extraordinary refinement of the grounds. Miró
has rarely displayed such sensuous skill in the treatment of his
ground. He did this in a spirit of complete freedom ... Actually these paintings constitute (although this has never been said
before) one of the most important "series" in this artist's
work. (Ibid., p. 393)
