Lot Notes Major General John Talbot Coke (1841-1912), entered the Army 1859 and became Lieutenant, 25th Regiment, 1861; was present in Canada during the Fenian raids of 1866; Captain 1866; commanded the 2nd Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers in the Soudan, 1888 and took part in the action at Gemaizah (Mentioned in Despatches; Order of the Medjidie) and was present during the operations on the Nile in the following year; Colonel, 1888; he served in the South African War, 1899-1901 and commanded the 10th Brigade, South African Field Force as Major General from November 1899; was present at the relief of Ladysmith, the actions at Spion Kop, Vaal Kranz, Laing's Nek and the operations on the Tugela Heights and in Natal; subsequently commanded Volkrust Sub. District until January 1901 during which year he retired (Mentioned in Sir R. H. Buller's Despaches of 30th March, 19th June and 9th November, 1900 -- London Gazette 8.2.1901)
