The magazine listing states that this hand was donated by George Lucas to the Friends of the Joffrey Ballet. The advertisemet invited readers to offer sealed bids, the minimum to be $3,500, and the hand to be sent to the highest bidder.

According to Lucasfilm Archives, it is suggested that this "hand" was made for Return of the Jedi, but was probably not screen used as evidenced by its excellent condition.
