Explanation of Cataloguing Practice For Musical Instruments
1. Joseph Guarneri:
In our opinion a work by the maker; or in our opinion a work made
specifically for a dealer and originally sold by him, the identity of the
actual maker being unknown or unidentifiable. In other cases, the following
meanings are used.
2. Attributed to Joseph Guarneri:
In our opinion probably a work by the maker in whole or in part.
3. Ascribed to Joseph Guarneri:
The instrument is believed to be by the named maker in the opinion of the
author(s) or authority(ies) whose literature or certificates are referred to
in the footnote to the lot.
4. Workshop of Joseph Guarneri:
In our opinion the instrument was probably executed by an unknown hand on
the premises of and under the direct supervision of the named maker.
5. School of Joseph Guarneri:
In our opinion a work by a follower of the maker or in the style of works
associated with the place.
6. In the Style of/In the Manner of Joseph Guarneri:
In our opinion the instrument is after the style of but later than the work
of the named maker.
7. Labelled/Stamped/Branded/ Inscribed Joseph Guarneri:
Bears such a label, stamp etc. but is not, in our opinion, by the maker indicated and may be a later copy or modelled after work of that maker.
