ADRIANA VAN RAVENSWAAY WAS BORN IN 1816 IN HILVERSUM. ALTHOUGH SHE WAS PART OF AN ARTISTIC FAMILY, BEING THE SISTER OF JOHANNES VAN RAVENSWAAY (1815-1849) AND NIECE OF JAN VAN RAVENSWAAY (1789-1869), LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT HER. SHE LIVED AND WORKED IN HILVERSUM DURING HER ENTIRE LIFE, WHERE SHE DID MOST OF HER PAINTING AND TAUGHT ART CLASSES. VAN RAVENSWAAY IS PERHAPS BEST KNOWN FOR PAINTING STILL LIFES WHICH, LIKE THE PRESENT LOT, ARE EXCEPTIONALLY CHARMING WITH A LARGE VARIETY OF FLOWERS. A FEW TYPICALLY DUTCH LANDSCAPES CAN ALSO BE FOUND IN HER OEUVRE.
