Joining the Cossack Army in 1766, Platov fought in the Crimean campaign in 1771 and in the subsequent Russo-Turkish wars, being awarded the Order of St. George (3rd class) after the storming of Ismail in 1790. In the campaign against the French in 1807 he was awarded the Order of St. George (2nd class) and St. Alexander Nevskii. His service in the campaign of 1812-14 is legendary for which he was awarded the Order of St. Andrew.
