The present work is dateable to c.1565 (see C. van de Velde, Frans Floris: Leven en Werken, op. cit.). The use of white and pink highlights on the cheeks, nose and at the corners of the eyes are typical of late head studies by Floris. Van de Velde also suggests that this study may relate to the artist's Suicide of Lucretia in the Historisch Museum, Rotterdam, although in the present work the woman appears dressed, rather than nude.
