Whampoa Island, a favorite port scene of the China trade painters, represented the near-end of the journey for Western travelers to Canton. On its shorelines were the "bankshalls" or storehouses of the trading nations; its tall pagoda would have been visible to Western ships sailing up the Pearl River.
