The present work derives from the painting by Kauffmann which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1771 (no. 114), entitled Accontio and Adippe, taken from Ovid, Epist. 19. The exhibited picture was subsequently engraved by I. F. Marin in 1780 and appeared at Sotheby's on 30 June 2005, lot 102, with the incorrect title Orestes and Iphigenaia at Tauris.
