    The present painting can be dated to the late 1550s and early 1560s on the basis of the sitter's uniform. The gorget and helmet, known as a 'Spanish morion', indicate his status as an infantryman, while the colors on the band on his left arm indicate which prince he served under.

    with Wildenstein, when acquired by
    Astorre Mayer (1906-1977), Casa Bigli, Milan, 1962, and thence by descent.
