AN OLD INSCRIPTION ON THE REVERSE OF THE PICTURE DESCRIBES MISS CRESSETT AS THE 'ONLY CHILD OF EDWARD CRESSETT, DD BISHOP OF LLANDAFF & HIS WIFE FRANCES, DAUR OF FRANCIS PELHAM, M.P.' HOWEVER, IT IS LIKELY THAT FRANCIS PELHAM, M.P., IS A MISTAKE FOR THOMAS PELHAM, M.P., AS HENRY CRESSETT-PELHAM, WHO SUCCEEDED TO THE ESTATES OF MISS CRESSETT IN 1792 WAS THE SON OF THOMAS PELHAM (C.1678-1760), ONE OF THE TWO M.P.'S FOR LEWES, 1705-1741, (SEE LOTS 120 AND 121).
