Although his reputation has since been eclipsed by that of his brother, the sitarist Ravi Shankar, Uday Shankar was one of the foremost proponents of Indian musical tradition in the twentieth century. He was encouraged to popularize Indian dance by an early partner, the Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova. Throughout the 1930s in particular, he travelled throughout Europe and the United States bringing Indian dance to new audiences. This picture was reproduced in 'Tribute to Ballet', published in New York by the Macmillan Company in 1938, in which poems by John Masefield were complemented by pictures by Edward Seago.
