FIGHTING AMAZON, SIGNED AND DATED BY FRANZ VON STUCK
OIL ON PANEL
Painted in 1902.
The present painted composition was executed after a bronze of 1897 (fig. 1), and was repeated subsequently in other works of both mediums, including a monumental sculpture which he submitted for exhibition at Cologne Kunstverein of 1912.
Like Böcklin (see lot 94), Stuck was fascinated by the mythological symbols of Ancient Greece; he turned these into highly stylised and decorative compositions, which generate great drama with relatively sparing artistic means - in this case bold contrasts of colour, and strong outlines which emphasize the Amazone and horse's tensed musculature.
