    George Smith

George Smith was a landscape and animal painter who became well known for his pictures capturing the spirit of farm horses working in dappled sunlight. Born in Mid Calder, Midlothian, he studied art at Board of Manufacturers School and in Antwerp before returning to work in the Royal Scottish Academy life school. He painted many scenes in Scotland but also further a field in continental Europe and North Africa. As well as having large scale commissions from the King of Italy and Prince of Bavaria, he won the gold medal at the Antwerp International Exhibition and was also a member of the International Societé des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1924. The following group of works demonstrate his ability to incorporate animals and figures into a variety of settings that are tonally and compositionally impressive.
