Lot Essay

Israels painted the present lot during his visit to Java in 1921-1922. It has the illuminating brightness which is typical for the works he made during his trip to Indonesia. A 'pendopo' is a simple Javanese architectural structure wich can be used as a stage, but also for common rituals or receiving guests. Israels viewpoint was from inside such a 'pendopo' looking towards the crowd in the open air. Please compare the present lot to a similar painting by Isaac Israels entitled 'Vanuit de Pendopo' (1921/22), in: J.P. Glerum, De Indische Israels, Zwolle 2005, cat.no. 116.
